A supervisor's skills

Include:

  • having a philosophy of supervision which is reflected in practice
  • the ability to contract
  • understanding and identifying what the key issue is in any sessional contract
  • taking a meta-perspective
  • understanding and being aware of the parallel process and how to deal with it
  • increasing the coach’s developmental direction
  • developing and maintaining an equal relationship
  • understanding ethical issues

A supervisor’s responsibilities also include quality standards and protection for the client. This means that should a client have cause for complaint the supervisor is aware of the issues involved as they have been working with the coach. This therefore increases the level of responsibility held by the supervisor.
